Creative Carpet Repair Daily Log |
|
| 4/15/07 | 7:30 A.M. I go to the city of Goleta alone to the first carpet repair because it’s a small job and my helper isn’t needed. When I arrive at the home of Richard S. he shows me the problem, his carpet is worn away from the transition between the hall and the linoleum in the bathroom. The carpet is attached to the linoleum by a Z bar and there is a 2 inch area that is worn out. The tacks are sticking through where the carpet is supposed to be and he complains that the tack strip nails are hurting his 3 year old son, his wife and himself. I explain that I can do a small patch and attach the new carpet to the Z bar for $90.00. The Z bar was loose so I started by re-enforcing it with concrete nails. Then I repaired carpet. Putting in the small patch using my straight edge, carpet seam iron, a couple of feet of high quality seam tape, tractor, hammer and a carpet knife were quick. Including meeting the customer, filling out the invoice, doing the job, cleaning up and getting paid took about 35 minutes. The fun part was being watched by the 3 year old boy in his pajamas. 8:30 A.M. I picked up my helper for the day. It’s spring break so I’m taking my 13 year-old daughter to work with me. 9:45 A.M. The next stop is in Camarillo. This is a non paying stop because it’s my own fault that he has a problem. A few days earlier I cut his phone cord accidentally when hiding it under the carpet. Today I’m pulling the carpet back and putting a new phone cord between the carpet padding and the tack strip, then re-installing the carpet. This takes about 20 minutes. 10:45 A.M. We drove 30 minutes to a mobile home in Agoura Hills. Adam S. is selling his mobile home and needs a patch in his carpet. When we show up his roommate answers the door and informs us that Adam isn’t home. I call Adam S. him from my cell phone. He informs me that he will be home in 20 minutes but that his roommate is can let us in so we can get started. The roommate shows us where the patch needs to be and gives me a scrap of carpet to use. I call Adam S. again to tell him the price will be $120.00. Adam S. says go ahead and get started and that he’ll be home soon. 30 minutes later Adam S. arrives home as we are finishing the patch. We talk a few minutes, get paid and drive back to Camarillo for the next carpet repair. 12:00 P.M. We drive up to an enormous custom home. Jim L. is in the after market car parts business. My daughter is in awe at the grandeur of this home. It’s really big. The home is three stories high and sprawls far and wide. Jim L. is putting his home up for sale just like Adam S. from the job before. The carpet problem I’ve been called to solve is ripples. There are six rooms of carpet that need to be stretched. There is also a hallway carpet that is loose. I bid $425.00 to stretch the loose carpet and promise that it will look at least 95% better. I always under promise so that there’s a good chance that I can over deliver. It took me and my little girl less than 2 hours to fix the carpet. I used my carpet power stretcher, mini carpet stretcher, rafco carpet stretcher, knee kicker, and all the tools needed to repair the seams that I had to take apart. When I finished stretching the carpet Jim L. asked me to look at three other carpet problems. There was a flood in his garage due to a broken pipe and two sets of stairs got wet. He had removed the carpet himself to dry it out and needed me to put back it back in. Also the carpet on one stair indoors was loose. It took an extra half hour to do these three other carpet repairs. When it came time to pay the bill I asked for an extra $100.00 for the extra work. The total came out to $525.00 and he was totally satisfied. He was so happy to find someone to do this work. He didn’t know there was anyone like me that could save his carpet and he was looking at over $30,000 to replace all the carpet in his huge home. The fact that I earned $250.00 per hour didn’t bother him at all because I saved him a small fortune. 2:30 – 3:30 P.M. My daughter is starving so we stop for pizza and a soda. 4:00 P.M. The next carpet repair is in the city of Moorpark, it takes us 30 minutes to drive there. Alex B. had a new fireplace installed into his home and needed me to re-install the carpet around the rocks on a concrete floor. The carpet needed to be installed several inches under the hearth so installing the tack strip was going to be a challenge. I informed Alex B. That the cost was $150.00 and he readily agreed to the price due to the challenging nature of this carpet repair. In order to nail the tack strip down I first folded the carpet back then trimmed the pad back using a slotted blade knife. Then I used a special carpet tack strip adhesive called CX- 948 to hold the tack strip in place. Then to hammer down the nails I used my magnetic drive bar. The whole job took about 45 minutes including cleaning up. 5:30 P.M. The next carpet repair is in the city of Simi Valley. It’s about a 30 minute drive. Bob W. has a big red stain in the middle of his living room carpet left behind from an old bean bag chair. In addition to the patch needed he needed loose carpet to be tacked down on the stairs and in the upstairs hall. Lastly he needed a television cable hidden under the carpet because the installers from Best Buy did such a lousy job. I did the patch in the living room using a special tool that I designed myself. This tool allows me to perform a perfect cut every time. While I was doing the patch my daughter went around the house with the staple gun and tacked down the carpet and used the stair tool to tuck it in around the edges. She did a good job. To hide the T.V. Cable under the carpet I needed to cut a new seam to flip back the carpet. Then I cut the padding with my slotted blade knife and taped the cable in between the two sides of the cut. I used several layers of padding tape on top of the cable and pad. Then I seamed the carpet back together and tucked it in around the edges. This job took about an hour and a half and we charged $295.00. 7:00 P.M – 7:45 We drive back home. I worked about 12 hours this day and earned well over $1100 after paying all expenses. |
| 4/16/07 | Today I only had one job. This man (Jim P.) is a retired fighter pilot and then retired from 30 years of flying jumbo jets for United Airlines. The home is on the coast between Ventura and Santa Barbara in an area called Faria Beach. The problem he was having is that he replaced 3 sliding glass doors and needed the carpet re-installed. Also sun and salt air had deteriorated the carpet along the sliding glass doors. When I pulled back the carpet on the first door I noticed that the tack strip was far too close. I first removed the tack strip using a hooked pry bar and my hatchet hammer. Then I replaced the tack strip and stretched the carpet into place. Since the carpet was so deteriorated I decided to use a lot of staples to hold it in place. I used my electric carpet staple gun to do this. The other two doors didn’t have any tack strip so they went faster. All together I spent nearly an hour at his home and charged $200.00. He is fully satisfied. |
| 4/17/07 | Pat R. Called me to fix her carpet in Goleta because her dog damaged it in two places and she dripped wax in one place.. The dog tore up the carpet near her fire place, on her stairs and also chewed up a pen in her bedroom. Pat needed three patches. I used a special carpet patch template tool that I made for the first patch. It came out perfect. The next patch was on the stairway. I hand cut the carpet to match. The last patch was the ink stain. For this patch I used my carpet cookie cutter. All together I was at this house for about 35 minutes. The amount charged was $150.00 The next job was just a 5 minute drive. Linda K. heard about me from her brother who saw the advertising on my truck. She needed 2 small patches. I used the carpet cookie cutter. This job only took about 15 minutes so I charged her only 1/2 of my preferred minimum charge. $60.00 Today I worked from 9:45 A.M until 11:00 A.M including driving and earned $210.00 minus the cost of fuel and a few glue sticks |
| 4/18/07 | 8:30 The first job today was in Port Hueneme for Tammy M. Her dog tore up her Berber carpet in several places. I told her on the phone that she would need to supply some carpet . We decided that I would use the carpet from one of her closets to do the patches. Then put different carpet that she would supply back into her closet. She was a very cute lady and we talked alot. That made the job take a long time. After the job was finished we talked some more and I drank some of her coffee. I spent about 2 1/2 hours there and charged her only $125.00. This job could have been done in half the time if I wasn't such a flirt. 11:30 The next job was a 30 minute drive to Agoura Hills. Sandy M. only needed the landing on her stairway stretched. I used my mini stretcher and kicker. The job only took about 10 minutes. I charged $100.00 as a minimum. 12:15 From Agoura I drove to Thousand Oaks where I met Lynn H. Her problem was that she had new wood floors installed and the installers got some stains on the carpet. I charged $135.00 for a 3' x 5' patch and it took about 45 minutes. 1:30 Finally I drove to the city of Newbury park to do some carpet to tile transitions. Some of the transitions needed shims. 1 charged Red W. $150.00 for an hour and ten minutes work.

| 4/19/07 | This morning I left the house with only one job on my schedual. Ryan M. has a giant yellow lab that scratched the transition between the carpet and entry floor. I bid $150.00 to patch it and finished the job one hour later. As I was getting into the truck to go home the phone rang. It was a women just 2 blocks away with a similar problem. Jenny O. lives at her cousins house. Her parents came over to visit and brought her pit bull with them. When they all went out for breakfast together they left the dog in her bedroom where he tried to dig his way out. I bid $125.00 to fix it and was finished in about 1/2 an hour. |
| 4/20/07 | Just one job today. Jim P. of Westlake Village asked me to restretch his carpet in his home. The carpet was rippled up in his bedroom, hall, and family room. I bid $225.00. This job took about 1 1/2 hours. |
| 4/21/07 | Today was a long day. I wished I had some help today but worked hard and finished. Diane H. wanted carpet taken from her dining room and re-installed on her staicase. She also needed a small patch. I bid $400.00. This job took nearly 4 hours. Mrs. Brown has a small amout of pet damage. Her cat scratched her carpet up around a doorway. I bid $120.00 and finished in 20 minutes. Bastiaan B. had a few ripples in his carpet upstairs in a hallway and in the master bedroom. I needed to cut the carpet near the seam to stretch the carpet properly. I used my special tools to make the seam look nearly perfect when I was finished. I bid $225.00 and this job took about 2 hours. Kent S. has a rental home with ripples in the carpet. I bid $195.00 to remove the ripples. It took about an hour using my mini-stretcher and a couple of special carpet tools I use. |
| 4/22/07 | Today is Sunday. I usually don't work on Sunday but I plan on taking four days off next week. Rene' G. called me to patch a large area in her daughters bedroom. She told me on the phone that she doesn't like to see seams. When I arrived the first thing I noticed was about $200,000 worth of sports cars in the driveway. The house was a multi-million dollar, high end home. Rene' showed me the carpet to do the patch with and then showed me her daughters' bedroom. She pointed out a seam that "drove her crazy." My response was, "I should just go and not do this job, you are the type of people that pay close attention to the details and can easilly afford a new carpet. I don't believe you will be happy with what you are asking me to do." Rene' thanked me for my honesty and then showed me something else I could fix. The carpet was coming away from the floor at the transition and she asked me to fix it. The tack strip was too far away to tuck in the carpet. I removed the tack strip that was there and then replaced it using the CX-948 tack strip adhesive. Then it was just a matter of stretching the carpet up to the tile. . I bid $125.00, did the small repair in 15 minutes and left with a happy customer. |
